7 Days from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Draa Valley

Your 7 Days from Marrakech to Sahara Desert begins with a private pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech at 8:30 AM. Within a short time, the busy streets of the city give way to mountain roads as you climb into the High Atlas Mountains toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters.

Rather than rushing through the mountains, take time to appreciate the changing scenery: terraced hillsides, isolated homes, deep valleys, and small Berber villages appearing between the bends.

Continue south to Aït Ben Haddou, where a cluster of earthen towers and old houses rises above the surrounding landscape. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a fascinating look at the architecture and trading history of southern Morocco. Walk through the narrow lanes and climb to the higher sections for views across the surrounding valley.

After Aït Ben Haddou, continue to Ouarzazate before heading toward the Draa Valley, where the landscape becomes noticeably greener as palm groves begin to appear. Arrive at your traditional riad or kasbah-style accommodation and settle in for your first evening in southern Morocco.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 350–380 km
Accommodation: Riad or Kasbah in Draa Valley
    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 2: Draa Valley – Alnif – Sidi Ali – Tafraoute Sidi Ali – Ouzina Desert

After breakfast, your 7 Days from Marrakech to Sahara Desert continues away from the busy tourist routes and into a quieter side of Morocco. Leave the palm groves of the Draa Valley and head toward changing desert scenery, small settlements, dry valleys, and traditional Berber communities.

As you continue toward Sidi Ali and Tafraoute Sidi Ali, the roads become increasingly remote. This section is one of the distinctive features of the journey, taking you away from the more frequently traveled desert routes.

Travel by 4×4 across open hamada and desert tracks toward Ouzina, where the landscape becomes increasingly sandy and isolated. In the afternoon, reach your desert accommodation and take time to explore the surrounding dunes.

Depending on the camp arrangement, continue by camel or 4×4 toward the dunes for sunset. Try sandboarding, enjoy a Moroccan dinner, and spend the evening listening to local music around the fire beneath the open desert sky.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 280–320 km
Accommodation: Charming Riad or Desert Camp in Ouzina
    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3: Ouzina Desert – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi

Start the morning quietly with the sunrise over the Ouzina landscape. After breakfast, leave this remote desert region behind and continue by 4×4 toward Merzouga.

As you approach Erg Chebbi, the scenery changes again. The low, rocky desert gradually gives way to large golden sand dunes, creating one of the most recognizable landscapes of the Moroccan Sahara.

Arrive in Merzouga during the afternoon and prepare for your next desert experience. Depending on your chosen arrangement, travel by camel or 4×4 into the dunes to reach your luxury camp.

Watch the sunlight move across the Erg Chebbi dunes before sunset. After dark, enjoy dinner and traditional Berber music around the campfire, with the silence of the Sahara stretching far beyond the camp.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 100–140 km
Accommodation: Luxury Desert Camp in Merzouga
    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley

Wake early for sunrise over Erg Chebbi before breakfast at the camp. Today, your 7 Days from Marrakech to Sahara Desert moves from the dunes toward the mountains and valleys of southeastern Morocco.

Leave Merzouga and stop in Rissani, an important historic trading town where the traditional market still plays an important role in local life. If your visit falls on a market day, you can see locals trading dates, produce, spices, livestock, and everyday goods.

Continue toward Todra Gorge, where enormous limestone walls rise on both sides of the narrow canyon. Take a walk through part of the gorge and enjoy the dramatic change from open desert to towering rock.

From Todra, continue toward the Dades Valley, following roads surrounded by red cliffs, scattered villages, and patches of green vegetation. Arrive at your accommodation in the evening and enjoy dinner in the valley.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 250–280 km
Accommodation: Riad or Hotel in Dades Valley
    Meals: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 5: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

After breakfast, begin the journey back toward Marrakech along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. The route follows the Dades region before continuing through Ouarzazate and back toward the High Atlas.

The landscape changes constantly throughout the day, moving from rocky valleys and kasbah country to high mountain scenery. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass once again and stop at suitable viewpoints to enjoy the mountain panorama.

As you descend from the Atlas Mountains, the landscape gradually opens toward the Marrakech plains. Arrive in Marrakech during the afternoon and check into your riad or hotel.

The evening is free. You can explore the medina, visit Jemaa el-Fna, enjoy a Moroccan meal, or simply rest after several days on the road.

    Driving Distance: Approximately 300–330 km
Accommodation: Riad or Hotel in Marrakech
    Meals: Breakfast

Day 6: Full Day Exploring Marrakech

Today, your 7 Days from Marrakech to Sahara Desert gives you time to experience Marrakech at a slower pace after several days of traveling through mountains and desert landscapes.

Discover some of the city’s historic landmarks, including the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, and Saadian Tombs. Continue into the medina and its colorful souks, where workshops and small stores display leather goods, spices, textiles, lamps, ceramics, and traditional Moroccan crafts.

Later, experience Jemaa el-Fna, the heart of Marrakech’s old city. As afternoon turns into evening, the square becomes increasingly lively with food stalls, performers, musicians, and locals.

The rest of the day is yours. Shop for souvenirs, enjoy a traditional hammam, relax at your riad, or simply wander through the medina without following a fixed schedule.

Accommodation: Riad or Hotel in Marrakech
    Meals: Breakfast

    Day 7: Marrakech – Departure

Enjoy your final breakfast in Marrakech. Depending on your departure time, you may have some free time for a final walk through the medina or a relaxed morning at your accommodation.

At the agreed time, your private driver will transfer you to Marrakech Menara Airport or another location in the city.

Your 7 Days from Marrakech to Sahara Desert comes to an end after a journey through the High Atlas Mountains, ancient kasbahs, remote desert tracks, Ouzina, Merzouga, Erg Chebbi, and the historic landscapes of southern Morocco.
