4 days Marrakech to Fes desert tour Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

Driving Distance: Approx. 320 km

Your 4 days Marrakech desert tour begins early in Marrakech, with the city gradually disappearing behind you as the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains. Follow the winding route toward the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, stopping along the way to appreciate mountain villages, deep valleys, and hillsides shaped by generations of Berber communities.

Once across the pass, continue toward Aït Ben Haddou, where earth-colored towers and old homes rise above the surrounding landscape. This UNESCO-listed ksar is one of southern Morocco’s most remarkable historic sites. Walk through its narrow passages and discover old houses, traditional architecture, and viewpoints overlooking the valley.

From Aït Ben Haddou, continue to Ouarzazate before heading east through the Skoura palm oasis. The scenery becomes greener as you pass traditional kasbahs surrounded by date palms. Further along, the Valley of Roses offers another change of scenery, particularly during the flowering season.

By late afternoon, reach the Dades Valley, where rugged cliffs and scattered green fields create a striking contrast. Settle into your hotel or riad and enjoy dinner after your first day on the road.

Overnight: Hotel or riad in Dades Valley
Meals: Dinner included

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

Driving Distance: Approx. 270 km

After breakfast, your 4 days Marrakech desert tour continues deeper into southeastern Morocco. Follow the Dades Valley through small villages, palm-filled areas, and unusual rock formations before reaching Todra Gorges.

Here, the road enters a narrow passage surrounded by enormous limestone cliffs. Leave the vehicle for a walk through part of the gorge and take in the scale of the rock walls and the river below.

From Todra, continue through Tinjdad and Erfoud, a region known for fossils and date-growing oases. Gradually, the landscape becomes drier and more open until the first dunes of the Merzouga Sahara Desert appear on the horizon.

Meet your camel guide and cross the Erg Chebbi dunes as the afternoon light begins to soften. From the back of your camel, watch the colors of the desert change before stopping to enjoy the sunset.

Your evening continues at a luxury desert camp with Moroccan dinner, traditional drumming, local music, and time around the fire beneath the open desert sky.

Overnight: Luxury Desert Camp in Merzouga
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Nomad Life – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi

Today, the 4 days Marrakech desert tour focuses on the people, landscapes, and traditions surrounding Merzouga.

Wake before sunrise and walk to a nearby dune to watch the first light spread across the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast, leave the camp and explore the wider Merzouga region by 4×4.

One of the day’s most personal experiences is meeting a nomadic family. Learn how they have adapted their lifestyle to the desert environment and hear about traditions that are rarely experienced by visitors following the main tourist routes.

Continue to Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa musical heritage. Spend some time listening to local musicians before continuing through the surrounding desert.

Depending on the season, the route may include a seasonal lake and nearby fossil areas. Travelers looking for more activity can choose quad biking, sandboarding, a buggy ride, or a 4×4 excursion across the dunes.

Later, return to your accommodation near Merzouga. The afternoon is free for swimming, relaxing, photography, or simply enjoying the changing light across the desert.

Overnight: Hotel near the dunes in Merzouga
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes

Driving Distance: Approx. 470 km

After breakfast, the final stage of your 4 days Marrakech desert tour takes you away from the Sahara and toward northern Morocco.

Begin in Rissani, an old trading town where the traditional souk offers a glimpse into the commercial life of southern Morocco. If your visit coincides with market day, explore stalls selling dates, spices, produce, livestock, and everyday goods.

Continue north through the Ziz Valley, following a ribbon of green palms surrounded by dry mountain slopes. The contrast between the oasis and the surrounding terrain makes this one of the most distinctive landscapes of the journey.

The road then rises into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Near Azrou, stop in the cedar forest, where Barbary macaques can often be seen among the trees.

Further north, reach Ifrane, a mountain town with a completely different atmosphere from the Sahara. Its cool climate, stone buildings, and alpine-style streets make it an interesting final stop before Fes.

Continue to Fes, arriving in the evening. Your 4 days Marrakech desert tour ends with drop-off at your riad, hotel, or Fes airport available on request.

Meals: Breakfast included
